Advice for new homeschooling kids!

Advice for new homeschooling kids!

(There's a video made by Marnie about this topic down below after you've read this post, or you could skip to it straight away!)

This is an adventure!! Always keep a positive attitude! Homeschooling is a fun time of learning and discovery! If you're new to homeschooling you might be feeling anxious about all the changes, and unsure of yourself and

what it's all about. Homeschooling is a great way to de-stress and relax. It's a time of nurturance, growth and discovery!

The two biggest concerns for most newly homeschooled kids is “How will I make friends?” and “How do I know if I'm keeping up with everyone else?”. It's perfectly normal to have doubts or be to be unsure about the future, but I'm here to encourage you!

You can keep contact with your school friends and make new homeschooled ones. There are so many great homeschool families, especially where I live in Geelong where there are hundreds of homeschool kids! We have a big online network of families around Geelong that I use to stay in contact and find out about group events and activities. See if you can find an online group or community in your local area! It might take a while for you to find a group of people you like but don't be discouraged! It takes time.

A really good way to make friends is to join lots of activities! After school activities are endless! Swimming, sports, music, dance, theatre or drama, choir, chess, scouts, arts and crafts, photography – follow your interests! Youth groups are also a good positive place to make friends and connect with other young people.

When getting together with other homeschoolers, don't be ruled by the idea of an “age bracket” where you can only hang with kids your own age. The beauty of homeschoolers is they're happy to play with little ones as well as talk with the adults! You'll probably find yourself making great friends of all ages!

Another piece of advice, is not to compare yourself to schooled kids, and obsess about what they're learning at school. You have the freedom to choose what you'll spend your time learning and doing. Use that freedom to work on projects that you're interested in! Do you have a specific goal or career in mind? You can channel all your learning and become expert in what you're interested in.
