Values.
-Melinda Harrington
Are there intrinsic values that you are
able to instill in your children as homeschool parents that are different from
the values that children learn at school?
Well, after much consideration my opinion is … Yes, of course!
Every family is different and every family values
different things. Some families value hard work and are highly competitive.
Other families value co-operation and peaceful cohabitation. I recall one family I met who believed that
service to others was the primary purpose and reason for living – their
children were involved in many community projects and activities. For other
families, generating a respect for nature and the environment is the most
valued approach to life. While some people value conformity, others value
diversity. Spiritual values are
extremely important to some homeschool families; other families I’ve met value
the freedom to explore the world and live each day as an adventure.
Schools vary in their capacity and desire
to instil particular values in their students. Schools are also subject to
government regulations in relation to the types of values that are deemed
acceptable. As a homeschooling parent, you have the right, the responsibility
and the power to promote the values in your family that you believe in.
Children learn as they grow up in family
and community – watching, observing and living out the values that underpin
daily life. I’d suggest that children who are homeschooled are learning
important lessons about their own value; their own individuality and worthiness,
not to mention important lessons about the value of family and community.
If you had to state out loud what values
you are instilling in your homeschooled children, what would you say? Do you purposefully live out your values
every day, or do you have a vague idea of how you want your children to grow
up?
